DOCUMENTARY WORK: – the golden venture
Work in Progress: A series of diptychs and portraits explores the history and legacy of the Golden Venture, the human smuggling ship carrying 286 refugees and migrants from China that ran aground off the Queens, NY shore on June 6, 1993.
Ten people died; the survivors were held in indefinite detention during their immigration and asylum proceedings. The documentary traces the experiences of some of these men in portraits and interviews – how have their fates diverged in the 20-plus years since the shipwreck?
